Ali and the World of Animals

A Knock at the Window

One bright Saturday, a soft tap-tap came at Ali's window. A small sparrow sat on the sill, one wing held low, hopping in worried circles. Ali opened the window slowly so as not to frighten it. The sparrow looked up with shining bead eyes, then fluttered toward the garden gate and waited, as if asking Ali to follow.

Into the Green Woods

Ali pulled on boots and followed the little bird across the meadow and into the cool green woods. Sunlight fell in stripes through the leaves. The sparrow led the way, resting often, until they reached a tall oak where a whole crowd of animals had gathered — rabbits, a wise old badger, two squirrels, and a deer with gentle eyes.

The Forest's Problem

Our stream has stopped, said the badger. A great branch fell in the storm and blocked the water. Now everyone is thirsty. The animals were small, and the branch was heavy. They had been waiting, the sparrow chirped, for someone with clever hands. Ali looked at the tangle of wood and water and rolled up both sleeves.

Working Together

Ali could not lift the branch alone — but no one had to. Ali showed the squirrels how to gnaw the smaller twigs, the rabbits how to dig a little channel, and the deer how to push with its strong shoulder while Ali pulled. Bit by bit the branch shifted. Then, with a happy gurgle, the cool water broke free and rushed down the stream again.

The Forest Says Thank You

The animals drank and cheered in their own small voices. The badger dipped its head. You listened, and you helped. The forest will remember. The sparrow's wing was rested now, and it flew a quick, joyful loop around Ali's head. Walking home through the gold-striped trees, Ali understood a quiet truth: in the world of animals, everyone takes care of everyone — and people belong to that circle too.

The Path Marked with Acorns

Before Ali left, the wise old badger pressed a smooth acorn into Ali's palm. Whenever you wish to visit, it said, plant this at the edge of the meadow, and the path will open for you. The squirrels chattered their goodbyes from the branches, the rabbits thumped a cheerful drumbeat, and the gentle deer walked Ali as far as the meadow's edge. All the way home, the little sparrow flew loops overhead, singing a bright new song. Ali planted the acorn that very afternoon, and sure enough, a slender path of green appeared, winding back toward the trees. Ali smiled, knowing the world of animals was no longer a secret place — it was a circle of friends, always ready to welcome one more.

In the forest, everyone takes care of everyone — and we belong to that circle too.
